The design stages of a byzantine icon are briefly:

  • Preparing the anthivolo (preliminary drawing, template)
  • Printing anthivolo on wood
  • Gilding of the icon
  • Underpaint based on the background  of the icon  (Proplasmoi)
  • Grapsimata (dark rendering)
  • Lammata (bright rendering)
  • Face characteristics
  • Face Lammata (flesh brightness)
  • Inscription on the icon

Each stage can be accomplished with various techniques. The values of each icon depends on the time and the materials dedicated to the icons.
