The design stages
The design stages of a byzantine icon are briefly:
- Design of the icon on paper
- The preparing the wooden surface
- Preparing the anthivolo (preliminary drawing, template)
- Printing anthivolo on wood
- Gilding of the icon
- Underpaint based on the background of the icon (Proplasmoi)
- Grapsimata (dark rendering)
- Lammata (bright rendering)
- Face characteristics
- Face Lammata (flesh brightness)
- Inscription on the icon
- Varnishing
Each stage can be accomplished with various techniques. The values of each icon depends on the time and the materials dedicated to the icons.
